Both San Francisco and California State law have requirements regarding smoke detectors in homes. In San Francisco, every dwelling unit must be equipped with smoke detectors which receive power from the electrical system. Battery operated smoke detectors are permitted in single or two family dwellings.
As all housing units are designed differently, there I no catch all description that describes exactly where smoke detectors should be installed. However in general, smoke detectors should be installed in:
- Any hallway or area outside bedrooms or sleeping areas. When bedrooms are on multiple floors, it generally means an additional smoke detector.
- On every story of a home, including basements.
- In all stairwells of apartment buildings.
In the sale of a home, the seller must provide the buyer with a written statement confirming full smoke detector compliance. This should be delivered prior to delivery of title.
